Face recognition photo sharing for events: how it works, and is it private?
Face search for event photos sounds like a privacy risk, so it is worth understanding exactly what happens. Done properly, it lets each guest find their own pictures without anyone browsing other people's photos.
How selfie-based photo search works
- When photos are uploaded, a face-detection model finds the faces in each picture and turns each one into a descriptor: a list of numbers that describes the face. This is not an image.
- When a guest scans the event QR code, the phone camera takes a short live selfie scan.
- The guest's face is turned into the same kind of descriptor, on the guest's phone.
- The descriptor is compared with the descriptors of the faces in the photos. Photos with a close match are shown to the guest.
What should happen to the selfie?
A safe platform never uploads the selfie image. In NinjaPic the face scan runs in the guest's browser and only the numbers are sent to find matches. The selfie picture stays on the phone and is not saved.
Privacy questions to ask any provider
- Does the selfie leave the phone? It should not.
- Can a guest browse everyone's photos? On a private event they should only receive photos their own face appears in. Public events, where everyone may browse, should be an explicit choice by the photographer.
- How long is face data kept? It should be deleted automatically when the event's storage period ends, or earlier if the photographer deletes the photos or the event.
- Who can see the photos? The platform's admins should not have access to event photos; links to photos should be signed and expire.
- Can photos be hidden or removed? A guest who does not want a photo shared should be able to ask the photographer to hide or delete it.
Accuracy: what to expect
Face matching works best with a clear, well-lit selfie and photos where the face is reasonably visible. It copes with group shots and side angles, but no system is perfect: very small faces, heavy shadows, or faces covered by sunglasses and masks can be missed. That is why guests can scan again, and photographers can keep an "all photos" option when appropriate.
Why photographers like it
- No more manual sorting or "please send me my photos" requests.
- Guests get their photos quickly, often during the event.
- The delivery experience carries your studio's branding.
